The 2022 SmartARTS Education Institute was held July 18th to July 21st in-person at the Fine Arts Center as part of Greenville County’s Summer Academy. SmartARTS had requests from 115 teachers to participate and we were able to accept 89 teachers into the program for this academic year. Teachers received training in arts integration best practices as well as immersion experiences in creative writing, drumming, printmaking, mask-making, theater, dance, and visual arts.

The Judi Cassell Teaching Artist Fellow, Sunny M McGowan, led a workshop entitled, “Printmaking and Cross-curricular Symbolism.” Dr. Wonda Hillard, led a workshop entitled “The Mask We Wear: Un-Masked Rituals, Myths, Folklore, Fables, and Fantasy.” Dr. Martha R Westrope Fellow, Jeff Holland, led a workshop on sonic rhythms across the curriculum (drumming). On the last day of the training, teachers and artists met to plan their arts integration units for the upcoming school year.
