The 2023 SmartARTS Education Institute will take place July 17 to July 20, 2023 at the Fine Arts Center in Greenville, SC in partnership with Greenville County Schools.

2023 Presenters:
"Two Sides of the Coin: Integrating Drama and Math" with Barry Stewart Mann, MFA. Barry Mann is a professional actor, storyteller and arts educator based in Atlanta. He is a graduate of Harvard University and holds an M.F.A. in Theatre from the University of San Diego. Barry is on the faculty of Lesley University’s M.Ed. Program in Integrated Teaching through the Arts since 2008, teaching courses in “Drama and Critical Literacy” and “Cultural History Through Storytelling.” Barry is a roster performer and teaching artist with the Alliance Theatre, ArtsNOW, Fulton County Schools’ Teaching Museum, Georgia Wolf Trap, Georgia Council for the Arts, FABArts in Columbus, GA, and Utah State University ArtsAccess and Arts Are Core Programs, and worked in the past with the Atlanta Partnership for Arts in Learning, Young Audiences, California Playwrights Project, and San Diego Institute for Arts Education. He is a proud member of the National Storytelling Network, the Georgia Storytelling Network, and Actors Equity Association. Barry is on the roster of the Fulbright Specialist Program, a program of the U.S. State Department that supports residencies by American ‘specialists’ at universities around the world. He has been delighting audiences and inspiring students for nearly four decades, and brings a vibrant honesty and caring playfulness to his performances, workshops, classes, and scripts.
"Poetry Slam: Performance and Creative Writing for All" with Moody Black. A SmartARTS Teaching Artist, Moody Black has been a performing artist since the age of twelve has become a prominent force on a multi-regional poetry scene through his enthusiastic live shows and strong work ethic. Moody Black has a created a buzz with awards such as 2020 Upstate Music Awards- Artist of the Year, 2022 Black History Pioneer from 96.3 The Block, and 2022 Spoken-Word Artist of the Year from Southern Entertainment awards. He is a spoken word artist, actor, visual artist, comedian, TEDx Performer and the artistic director and host for Wits End Poetry, as well as a teaching artist across the state of South Carolina.
A SmartARTS Teaching Artist, Jess Stone is a mixed media artist who is a mother, artist, teacher, and wife. Jess started teaching art in high school at local art camps and then went on to receive her BFA from Clemson University and her MFA from Memphis College of Art in Memphis, TN. Jess was accepted to the South Carolina Arts Commission’s teaching artist roster which allowed her to travel the state teaching Printmaking, papermaking and bookbinding to K5-12th grade in various school districts. Jess Stone is also a SC certified art teacher and has taught at elementary schools as well as at both Converse College and Anderson University. Currently Jess works full time as an Artist and Mother, while continuing to work with the SmartARTS program.

The Judi Cassell Teaching Artist Fellow, Sunny M McGowan, led a workshop entitled, “Printmaking and Cross-curricular Symbolism.” Dr. Wonda Hillard, led a workshop entitled “The Mask We Wear: Un-Masked Rituals, Myths, Folklore, Fables, and Fantasy.” Dr. Martha R Westrope Fellow, Jeff Holland, led a workshop on sonic rhythms across the curriculum (drumming). On the last day of the training, teachers and artists met to plan their arts integration units for the upcoming school year.
